Newcomer Student and Family Support: Belonging From Day One
Belonging From Day One
Newcomer Student and Family Support for Schools
Your newcomer students get one orientation week. Then the hard part starts. BridgeAccess stays for the hard part.
Starting school in a new country is about much more than learning a new timetable. Newly arrived students are learning a new language, new social rules, and a new sense of who they are, often while their families are still finding their footing too.
BridgeAccess Consulting's Newcomer Student and Family Support Program, Belonging From Day One, helps schools support that whole transition, for students, for families, and for the staff who welcome them.
This work is personal to our founder. Helena Bentil, LCSW, migrated to the United States at age 14. She knows firsthand what it is like to arrive as a teenager, to feel out of place, and to experience bullying while trying to belong. That lived experience, combined with more than nine years in behavioral health and school-based support, shapes a program that is practical, warm, and grounded in what students and families actually need.
Who It Serves
This program serves:
- Newly arrived immigrant students in middle and high school, and the younger students in their families who are adjusting alongside them
- Parents and caregivers who are new to the U.S. school system
- School counselors, teachers, family engagement staff, and school leaders who welcome and support newcomer students
It is open to newcomer students and families from all countries and backgrounds.
How the Program Works
The program has three connected parts. Schools can begin with the full program, or start with staff training alone.
1. For Students: A Small Group That Builds Belonging
A 6- to 8-week small group for newly arrived students, focused on belonging, confidence, and practical skills for school life.
Students explore:
- Belonging and identity in a new school
- Boundaries, communication, and healthy relationships
- What bullying is, how to report it safely, and how to recover after it
- Managing stress, homesickness, and the pressure of adjusting quickly
- School success skills for a new system
The group is coaching and psychoeducation, not therapy. If a student needs therapy or other clinical support, BridgeAccess will help connect the family to appropriate support.
Each student is also paired with a peer buddy, and BridgeAccess checks in at 30 days and 90 days, so support does not end after orientation week.
2. For Families: A Welcome That Makes School Easier to Navigate
Through BridgeAccess Family Concierge Services, families receive plain-language welcome sessions and workshops that explain how U.S. schools work, who to contact, and how to get help.
Families learn:
- How the school day, grading, and communication with teachers work
- Who to contact for academic, health, and wellbeing support
- How bullying reports are handled, and how to ask for help safely
- How to support a child who is adjusting to life between two cultures
Sessions are offered in plain, accessible language, with translated materials where possible. BridgeAccess does not provide immigration legal advice. Questions about immigration matters are referred to trusted attorney partners.
3. For Staff: A Welcome Audit, Training, and a Clear Response Protocol
BridgeAccess works with school staff to make the welcome experience consistent and supportive from day one.
This includes:
- A welcome audit: what happens in a newcomer family's first week, who greets them, what is translated, who follows up, and where reports go
- Trauma-informed training for counselors, teachers, and family engagement staff
- A clear, practical bullying-response protocol, so every report is received with care, recorded and referred appropriately, and followed up
The goal is simple: no student should have to figure out alone how to be safe, be heard, and belong.
The One-Semester Pilot
Schools begin with a one-semester pilot.
A pilot typically includes:
- One student group
- A family welcome session series
- Staff training and a welcome audit
Pilot scope and pricing are provided in a customized proposal after a discovery call, tailored to your school's size, newcomer population, and current supports.
Our Safeguards
BridgeAccess is committed to support that families can trust:
- Open to newcomer students and families from all countries
- Immigration status is never asked for or recorded to access support
- Support is separate from discipline, so students are not afraid to tell the truth
- Student groups are coaching and psychoeducation, not therapy
- No immigration legal advice is provided; legal questions are referred to attorney partners
- Families' privacy and dignity come first in every conversation
Why BridgeAccess
BridgeAccess Consulting brings together Student Success Support, Family Concierge Services, and Organizational Consulting and Training in one program. That means a school does not need three separate providers to support a student, a family, and a staff team through the same transition.
Led by Helena Bentil, LCSW, the program combines professional experience in behavioral health, trauma-informed care, and school-based support with the lived understanding of arriving in a new country as a teenager.
